Hello Everyone!
How are you all??? I've been wonderfully busy since my last post and I am writing today to share some wonderful new wellness tools with you.
Did you know that
• 80 million people have some form of heart disease. (American Heart Association)
• 1 in 3 women and 1 in 2 men will have cancer in his or her lifetime. (National Cancer Institute)
• Over 20 million adults and children have diabetes. (American Diabetes Association)
Our Children Aren’t Very Healthy (from ‘On the Go Book)
• By the age of 12, an estimated 70% of our children have developed the beginning stages of hardening of the arteries. (Bogalusa Heart Study)
• 1 in 3 Americans born in 2000 will develop diabetes. (Journal of the American Medical Association)

" The problem of childhood obesity in the United States has grown considerably in recent years. Between 16 and 33 percent of children and adolescents are obese. Obesity is among the easiest medical conditions to recognize but most difficult to treat. Unhealthy weight gain due to poor diet and lack of exercise is responsible for over 300,000 deaths each year. The annual cost to society for obesity is estimated at nearly $100 billion. Overweight children are much more likely to become overweight adults unless they adopt and maintain healthier patterns of eating and exercise."
American Academy of Child Adolescent Psychiatry
"Although rare in the past, obesity is now among the most widespread medical problems affecting children and adolescents living in the United States and other developed countries. About 15% of adolescents (aged 12-19 years) and children (aged 6-11 years) are obese in the United States according to the American Obesity Association. The numbers are expected to continue increasing. Childhood obesity represents one of our greatest health challenges."
What can we do to make changes?
One thing that we can do is look at our Diet. Statistics tell us that 70% of all disease is diet related! There are over 4,500 published studies that prove eating more fruits and veggies is beneficial for your health!
The U.S. Government has spent billions trying to find a cure for heart disease, cancer, and other diseases.
Their Conclusion: Disease is easier to prevent than it is to cure.
Their Recommendation: Eat 7-13 servings of fresh fruits and vegetables every day.
The Problem: Almost no one does.
So, why are health authorities recommending raw fruits and vegetables to prevent disease? Let’s compare our bodies to an apple – what happens to an apple that is sliced set on the counter for a while? Right, it turns brown…. from the oxygen.
That is called OXIDATION. That is exactly what happens to our cells. Each cell in our body takes thousands of oxidative hits per day. Oxidation comes from just breathing, poor eating habits, stress and even exercising. “ANTI” oxidants neutralize oxidation and protect the cells. Antioxidants are found in FRUITS AND VEGETABLES. And we need a lot of fruits and vegetables every day to get what we need. THE PROBLEM – almost no one does.
This brings me to my reason for posting today. Our family fits into three of the above categories, and some categories I have not even listed.
My father was obese, diabetic, and had cancer. My sister was obese, and currently has cancer and diabetes and at least two auto-immune disorders. My mother is obese and is managing her blood pressure. My maternal grandmother died of cancer. My paternal grandmother had cancer, diabetes and obesity.
I have dealt with lifelong fatigue, and anemia. Motivating myself each day to get moving was a challenge.
As you can see from my family history, wellness was or has been a challenge. We did everything society said we should do, taking vitamins, seeing our doctors, in many cases many times over in an attempt to be healthy.
As early as March of this year I was still seeing doctors to find a 'cure' for my constant fatigue. I had tests done till I could count the black and blues from blood draws. I had my first ever mammogram and colonoscopy. The mammogram was done after my doctor felt what she thought was a lump, it was negative, THANK GOODNESS! The colonoscopy was positive for an adenoma, a pre-cancerous polyp which they removed. Again, THANK GOODNESS! All the treatment that was needed was to remove the polyp. I'm so glad I had the colonoscopy done. What was easily removed could have become cancer.
I felt better as far as peace of mind goes, having had these tests and blood work done but physically I was still feeling the fatigue and frustrated at not finding an answer. At the same time I was having these tests done, something else happened in March. I reconnected with a good friend and went to see her at her office. While I was there she shared with me something she was doing for her own well-being.
She mentioned that she was adding to her diet with whole food based nutrition through fruits and vegetables which equaled 7 to 13 servings a day. I laughed and said there was no way I could eat all of those fruits and veggies in a day even though I knew I needed to.I've always tried to eat healthy servings but keeping them fresh in my fridge, never mind the cost and preparation of them has been a factor in getting what I need.
She shared "I add these" and had a bowl on her desk with some fruit and veggie chews in it. She handed me the bowl and said try a couple and see what you think. So I took a couple. The taste was pretty good. That lead me to want to know more about fruit and veggies in my diet so I started doing research and decided to order the product for myself. I kept reading and realized that being deficient in fruits and veggies and the anti-oxidents they provided could lead to a host of health challenges, including cancer, obesity and fatigue.
Something else I learned - a diet lacking in an adequate supply of fruits and veggies can lead to something called Angiogenesis. It's based on the process that our bodies use to grow blood vessels.
So why should I care about blood vessels and fruits and veggies?
". . .The remarkable thing about blood vessels is that they have this ability to adapt to whatever environment they're growing in. For example, in the liver they form channels to detoxify the blood. In the lung, they line air sacs for gas exchange. . . We get most of these blood vessels when we're actually still in the womb. And what that means is that, as adults, blood vessels don't normally grow, except in a few special circumstances. In women, blood vessels grow every month to build the lining of the uterus. During pregnancy, they form the placenta, which connects mom and baby. And after injury, blood vessels actually have to grow under the scab in order to heal a wound. Hundreds of blood vessels all growing to the center of the wound. But what we now know is, for a number of diseases, there are defects in the system, where the body can't prune back extra blood vessels or can't prune grow enough new ones in the right place at the right time. And in these situations, angiogenesis is out of balance. And when angiogenesis is out of balance, a myriad of diseases result. . . insufficient angiogenesis, not enough blood vessels, leads to wounds that don't heal, heart attacks, and nerve damage among other things . . .on the other end, excessive angiogenesis, too many blood vessels, drives disease. And we see this in cancer, blindness, arthritis, obesity, Alzheimer's disease. In total, there are more than 70 major diseases, effecting more than a billion people worldwide, that all look on the surface to be different from one another, but all actually share abnormal angiogenesis as their common denominator. So the body's ability to balance angiogenesis, when it's working properly, prevents blood vessels from feeding cancers. And this turns out to be one of our most important defense mechanisms against cancer. In fact, if you actually block angiogenesis and prevent blood vessels from ever reaching cancer cells, tumors simply can't grow up. But once angiogenesis occurs, cancers can grow exponentially. And this is actually how a cancer goes from being harmless to deadly.
Starting in 2004, when antiangiogenic therapies first became available, there has been a 70 to 100 percent improvement in survival for people with kidney cancer, multiple myeloma, colorectal cancer, and gastrointestinal stromal tumors. That's impressive. But for for other tumors and cancer types, the improvements have only been modest.
So I started asking myself, "Why haven't we been able to do better?" And the answer, to me, is obvious; we're treating cancer too late in the game, when it's already established, and, oftentimes, it's already spread or metastasized. And as a doctor, I know that, once a disease progresses to an advanced stage, achieving a cure can be difficult, if not impossible. So I went back to the biology of angiogenesis and started thinking: Could the answer to cancer be preventing angiogenesis, beating cancer at its own game so the cancers could never become dangerous? This could help healthy people as well as people who've already beaten cancer once or twice and want to find a way to keep it from coming back. So to look for a way to prevent angiogenesis in cancer, I went back to look at cancer's causes. And what really intrigued me was when I saw that diet accounts for 30 to 35 percent of environmentally caused cancers. Now, the obvious thing is to think about what we could remove from our diet, what to strip out, take away. But I actually took a completely opposite approach and began asking: What could we be adding to our diet that's naturally antiangiogenic, that could boost the body's defense system and beat back those blood vessels that are feeding cancers? Our search for this has taken us to the market, the farm and to the spice cabinet because what we've discovered is that mother nature has laced a large number of foods and beverages and herbs with naturally occurring inhibitors of angiogenesis.
. . . Soy, parsley, garlic, grapes, berries, I could go home and cook a tasty meal using these ingredients.
What is the evidence in people that eating certain foods can reduce angiogenesis in cancer? Well, the best example I know is a study of 79,000 men, followed over 20 years, in which it was found that men whom consumed cooked tomatoes two to three times a week had up to a 50 percent reduction in their risk of developing prostate cancer. Now, we know that tomatoes are a good source of lycopene, and lycopene is antiangiogenic. But what's even more interesting from this study is that those men who did develop prostate cancer, those who ate more servings of tomato sauce actually had fewer blood vessels feeding their cancer. . . . For many people around the world, dietary cancer prevention may be the only practical solution because not everybody can afford expensive end-stage cancer treatments, but everybody could benefit from a healthy diet based on local, sustainable, antiangiogenic crops.
It turns out that adipose tissue, fat, is highly angiogenesis dependent. And, like a tumor, fat grows when blood vessels grow. So the question is: Can we shrink fat by cutting off its blood supply? So the top curve shows the body weight of a genetically obese mouse that eats nonstop, until it turns fat like this furry tennis ball. And the bottom curve is the weight of a normal mouse. If you take the obese mouse and give it an angiogenesis inhibitor, it loses weight. Stop the treatment, gains the weight back. Restart the treatment, loses the weight again. And, in fact, you can cycle the weight up and down simply by inhibiting angiogenesis. So this approach that we're taking for cancer prevention may also have an application for obesity."
