The Vagina Monologues . . . Part Three
So what is the Vagina Monologues? This from our fearless leader and Director, Chelsea Chase.
"The Vagina Monologues is an episodic play comprised of a varying number of monologues. Initially a one-woman show performed by the author, Eve Ensler, it was subsequently performed by 3 actresses, while most performances now feature at least one actress per monologue.
Every monologue somehow relates to the vagina, be it through sex, love, rape, menstruation, mutilation, masturbation, birth orgasm, the variety of names for the vagina, or simply as a physical aspect of the body. A recurring theme throughout the piece is the vagina as a tool of female empowerment, and the ultimate embodiment of individuality.
In 1998, Eve Ensler and others launched V-Day (which is celebrated on Feb. 14 alongside Valentine's Day), a global non profit that has raised over $50 million for women's anti-violence groups through benefit performances of The Vagina Monologues-- just like the one being performed this February at UWRF whose beneficiary is the local women's safe haven, Turning Point.'
