I opened my e-mail this morning and found a note from a friend thanking me for doing what I am doing, speaking out and sharing information and ideas about how we can make a difference in our health and wellness system.
My response to her was to thank her and point out that we are all doing this. That each one of us who writes a letter, makes a phone call, speaks to a friend is making a difference. It takes many voices, or as I said the other day, a village.
My reasons for doing this are many. Many of you have heard them before. I do it because my dad was a Korean War Vet and received good care in the VA Hospital whenever he was in the hospital and that was a lot because of what they used to call 'Shell Shock" and now know as PTSD. And because of that he was out of work more than in and that meant we did not get the medical care we needed because of lack of insurance.
I do it because my sister is dealing with this system and with a brain tumor and has had major challenges each time she needs to see a different doctor because her insurance company wants justification. She needs an anti-nausea medication that costs $300.00 per refill and the insurance company will not cover it. I could go on.
For myself. I was in the hospital for almost a month last year and I waited weeks for the insurance company to decide if it was covered and when they did they still did not cover all of it.
For every women, man and child on this planet that deserves the dignity of compassionate, timely, health and wellness care. Many don't get it because of their financial status, or lack of employment. Others may need care from an 'out of network' doctor that they can not afford or the procedure is deemed 'experimental', or pre-existing and again no coverage.
The list goes on. What I know is that I have been in health and wellness for about 28 years and it feels like little has changed from when I was a child. My mission has always been to be a loving and compassionate healer, in whatever way I have been, and am able to be. If that means writing and speaking as part of my work, bring it on.
My friend asked about a letter on health care that she was writing. She was going to send it to the paper and was now considering that maybe she should send it to The White House.
I said that I would send it to The White House via the website ( Click Here ) , mindful that they limit the content to 2000 words. Letters could be sent via good ole US mail and then you can say as much as you want. I also shared that I would also publish it wherever she could.
Since Tuesday I have sent two letters to The White House and called them once. I have also sent a letter to our local Congressman, Ron Kind (D) WI and called his office. I've also written a letter for the editorial section of our local paper. Today I plan to call our Senator.
This is the newest item on the table for health care as of yesterday, called The Trigger Option. Click Here to be taken to the DailyKos and read the excellent article there .
