Senator Ted Kennedy was a tireless and caring proponent of health care for many, many years. I grew up watching him work and he made countless positive changes in the world. He was a man that I will sorely miss in our government. I feel that his support of President Obama made a real difference in President Obama winning the campaign and perhaps were it not for Senator Kennedy we would not have President Obama in office. These two men cared for one another as good friends and Senator Kennedy was a wise and caring adviser.
Please honor what they were trying to do with health care. Drop the political speak, the rhetoric, the fighting, and consider all of the people who really need health care. Well care. Our grassroots movement is what helped to make history happen. I was one among millions who stapled pamphlets and rode in the Obama mobile in support of his Presidency. Please speak again to the people as people. Loving one another, caring for one another. Deserving of health care and wellness.
It is not about social class, race, ethnicity, sexual preference, age, per-existing conditions, where you live in the world, or statistics. It's not about ICD-9 codes, DRG's (codes that classify conditions and tell you what is covered) or what kind of coverage you have if any.
All of the above relates, but the bottom line, as many of my posts have shared is about people. You and I. My sister and her family. Every person who has been treated as a number, sent a denial of coverage notice, had their insurance canceled or even with insurance has found themselves filing bankruptcy because of health related costs that were not covered, covered in adequately, or because they had no insurance.
How many people are there like my sister? She was diagnosed with a brain tumor in June of 2007 and it took until October to get authorization from the insurance company to see an oncologist and begin any kind of treatment.
How many people have to choose between food and medicine.
It's time for us to look beyond the numbers. Instead look at that person in front of you as someone's grandmother. Someones, sister, daughter, mother or wife. Your family member. Would you sit still as your family member was denied coverage because the doctor was out of network, or because the treatment was considered experimental? Either of these things could save a life.
You might not agree with Michael Moore's politics but his movie Sicko shows how much people have suffered. Click Here to learn more about the movie. Click Here to sign the health care bill to pass H.R. 676. Or view my previous post and consider what George Lakoff has to say. It's a start.
Rest well Senator Kennedy, God Bless you and yours.
